Active Principles
Essential oil called "essence of Wintergreen" (0.5-0.8%): gaulterina, unfold at the methyl salicylate and spring. Acid-phenols: salicylic, caféico. Heterósidos hydroquinone: arbutósido. Tannins Catechists.
Drug Action
The monotropitósido (gaulterina) is hydrolyzed by the bacteria, resulting in methyl salicylate, an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, anticoagulant; The arbutósido has a urinary antiseptic. The essential oils in topical use, has a rubefaciente. The tannins give it an astringent (antidiarrheal local hemostatic, healing).
Indications
Rheumatism, neuralgia, influenza-like illnesses, colds, prevention of thromboembolism, cystitis, urethritis, ureteritis, pyelonephritis, diarrhea, wounds.
Contraindications
Gastric ulcers, treatment with anticoagulants or hemostats.
Do not prescribe to pregnant women, infants or children under two years.
Caution / Poisoning
The essential oil, via internal, it can produce great irritation of the gastric mucosa. The abuse of this plant by an internal frame (salicilismo) characterized by: tinnitus, nausea and vomiting, which is due to the excessive dosage of salicylates.

External use, in the form of liniment or ointment.
